plumber removes blockage in pipes

How to Tell If You Have a Serious Clog

You’re bound to experience a clogged drain sooner or later. Your drains get used daily, and you probably don’t always realize how much debris is being washed down them. That debris is what causes a blockage. Watch for these warning signs that indicate a serious clog is developing. With early detection, you can have your pipes professionally cleaned and avoid flooding as well as further damage to your plumbing system.

Slow Drainage

If water is taking longer than normal to drain from your sinks, tubs, and toilets, it could be the result of a blockage in the drain pipe that’s restricting the water flow. These clogs are typically a buildup of debris, such as soap scum, hair, food particles, or grease. They can form near your interior drains, in the p-trap, or further into the system along the sewer line.

Foul Odors

Foul odors can be caused by a variety of issues, but more often than not, they’re the result of a clogged drain. As organic matter such as hair, food, and grease builds up and gets stuck in your pipes, it gives off a foul odor as it rots and decays.

Water Backups

You never want to see your drains back up, but that’s exactly what happens once there’s a serious clog. When debris builds up enough to block the drain completely, the water will back up and may cause your sinks, tubs, or toilets to overflow. The water has nowhere else to go as it can’t make its way through the pipe. Further into your plumbing system, tree roots can create clogs in the sewer line, or a collapsed pipe can block the water from draining.

Low Water Pressure

We typically think of clogs as affecting how our water drains, but they can also cause a change in water pressure. A blockage could be reducing the flow of water to your sinks, tub, or shower. Depending on the severity of the clog, only one tap could be affected or all of them at once.

Gurgling Sounds

A clog in your drain will cause the water to bubble as it makes its way around the debris. This creates a gurgling, hissing, or trickling noise that you’ll notice coming from the drains. Since the blockage results in the water taking longer to drain, you’ll notice these sounds for a while after using them.

Don’t ignore these warning signs. By having your drains cleaned as soon as possible, you’ll avoid water and structural damage that could end up costing you even more money and inconvenience. Call Roberson’s Plumbing & Septic for all of your drain cleaning needs in Wilson, NC.
